Risinghurst Playing Field drainage works phase 2: Nov/Dec 2021

Remember last winter when the work took place to improve the drainage on the main playing field? This was a success and further pitch improvement work is ongoing, thanks to a grant from the Football Foundation. 3 more wet areas were identified for action this winter. A big thank you to the volunteers who have been preparing access by removing brambles, self-seeded small trees and scrub.
Further clearing was done by machine, and to remove roots from the ditch and banks. This was to enable a digger to go in to 3 areas:

a) Along the top field from the kissing gate to the woodland:

A new ditch along the fence line, to channel the water towards the side ditch running towards the London Rd.

b) Through the woodland/spinney:
Dig out and renew the existing ditch, with a collection point in the ancient pond location.

c) Lower end of Olive Jacks field (behind the pavilion):
To put in a short drain, to channel water from the underground spring.

The contractor has completed the works and water is already flowing along the restored ditch in the spinney. Overnight the pond area filled up and the water is flowing where it should. Please be patient with the mess, it will be sorted out. Watch to see what difference the drainage makes over the winter.

Drainage Phase 1 Nov 2020

The playing field gets saturated during the winter months, making it unplayable for the young footballers who use the pitches, and difficult for the many walkers, joggers and dog walkers who enjoy the fields. The Parish Council commissioned a survey of the land drainage and looked at a number of recommendations to help the situation.

Phase 1 of the drainage works was undertaken during lockdown 2 in November 2020. Volunteers came and worked with the grounds supervisor to clear overgrowth so that the open ditch could be accessed. White Horse Contractors were then able to clear out the open ditch, to install a new pipe across the field and repair an old pipe to improve the flow of water. They will return in the Spring to level the ground and re-seed with grass. The Parish Council is seeking external funding for the next phase of improvements.

Downside Dip Refurbishment 1st – 19th February 2021

The Parish Council want the play area to be a fun and safe place for children to enjoy playing. However, the play equipment at Downside Dip play area has become tired and worn. A working group of Parish Councillors removed the climbing frame and replaced the balance beams last year that were becoming unsafe. They got to work looking for replacements and the Parish Council decided to fund new equipment from Wicksteed.

The equipment will be installed between 1st -19th February 2021, and we ask for your patience as the Wicksteed team bring vehicles and equipment to the site. With grateful thanks for support and contributions for the following equipment from Councillors Roz Smith, Glynis Phillips and Chewe Munkonge who represent the area at Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council.

Pavilion Project:

A small group of interested parties (including representatives from cricket and football clubs) has been set up to assess the requirements for a new pavilion
on Risinghurst Playing Field with the aim of specifying a design and costing. We will keep you informed of progress.

Parks & Green Spaces
